![]() BRIAN HAGEN - REGIONAL NEWS DIRECTOR
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian is...well...Brian! He is the Regional News Director for KNZA Inc/Mscnews.net. He began at KAIR Radio in high school and has hung out here ever since. He's done a little bit of everything including morning show, remotes, live news and much more. About the only thing he hasn't done is play by play, but that would be fun to hear! He has won numerous awards for his writing and on-air presentation. Neil Wieland - Program Director/On-Air![]() Good morning KAIR-Country! It's Neil Wieland, the morning show host for Hot Country 93.7! A little bit about myself...
I grew up on a farm in North Central Kansas, specifically Morrowville, KS. (Trust me, it exists, you can look it up on a map.) Mom and dad kept me and my two older sisters busy with chores, teaching us the value of hard work while supporting all of our school activities. I play sports and was active in chorus and band throughout my school years, graduating in 2001 from North Central High School. From there I went to Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas, where I caught the radio bug my sophomore year, doing play-by-play for basketball games and d.j.-ing a weekly specialty show where I played my beloved 80's hits along with listener requests. Neil Wieland, a.k.a. "The 80's Man". I continued working in radio while pursuing a degree in Mass Communications from Kansas State University, where I graduated in 2006. While at K-State's student radio station - The Wildcat 91.9 - I had the opportunity to work alongside many talented people, which led to my first steady job at a "real" radio station, KMAN. Under the tute of Cathy Dawe and many others, I learned how a successful news-talk radio station operated. This was really when my schooling began. At KMAN, I learned the skills of reporting, producing, anchoring, and time-management - skills that would serve me well later on in life. In search of a full-time radio gig, I made the move from Manhattan to Hiawatha, where I was surrounded by more talented professionals who taught me (forced me) how to multi-task. My family thought I was a lost cause, but it turns out I can do two things at once. It was also in Hiawatha that I re-discovered a love of theatre, volunteering in several plays and musicals put on by the Hiawatha Area Arts and Theatre Society. Sometimes the best things in life are free, and that includes the relationships that you make with people when you're working together to put on a show! After three years in Hiawatha, I spent two months as a missionary in Slovakia, teaching English-as-a-foreign-language to high school students. This was probably the toughest thing I've ever done in my life, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's good to get out of your comfort zone and serve others, whether it's in a foreign country or in your own hometown. The people you meet will often teach you more than you teach them. Fast forward through a year spent outside of radio, which included a seasonal job at a greenhouse (everyone loves flowers), and here I am in Atchison, KS, back in radio. What can I say about Atchison? I love the history and natural beauty of northeast Kansas and nowere are those qualities on better display than in the terrain surrounding this pre-Civil War community. Likes: Live music, (all genres), history, singing, sports (watching and playing), theatre, and trivia (especially presidential!). Something You May Not Know About Me: I can say all 44 presidents in order. Give me a year and I can tell you who was president. Favorite TV shows: Parks and Rec, The Office, The Twilight Zone (original series). Favorite Movies: Shawshank Redemption, Rocky, All The President's Men, Field of Dreams, Back to the Future, Fetch, Goonies. Favorite Food: Probably burgers and fries (but I'll eat almost anything). Wait, is coffee a food? Favorite Drink: Coffee Favorite flower: Osteospermum. Go ahead, look it up. They are beautiful flowers. (I used to work at a greenhouse, otherwise I would have no answer.) Hobbies: Watching and playing sports, playing trombone and guitar, acting (when I can squeeze it in). Tom Kautz - Play by Play Sports
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom started with KAIR radio as a part time board op while he attended Benedictine College back in the mid-seventies. He began doing color commentary for Benedictine and High School basketball games with Bill Ervin. Tom assumed the role of play by play announcer for Benedictine in the mid-eighties and has been doing all Benedictine football and basketball games since, including numerous national tournament contests. Tom has also done high school football play by play since the mid-eighties and took over all high school basketball games in 2010, rarely missing a call. He has won numerous KAB awards. Gus Kautz - Color Commentator ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Gus has been attending games with his dad, Tom, since he was old enough to climb the stairs himself. He began as an official color commentator in 2010 for KAIR Radio covering Benedictine and high school football and basketball games. |
